Addiction Treatment and Cannabis

What symptoms can Cannabis relieve?

Although Tetrahydrocannabinol or “THC” is the most known of the compounds in marijuana, at least 66 cannabinoids have been isolated from this plant. The effects of most of these compounds is still unknown and it is widely believed that it is the combination of these chemicals which creates the diverse range of medical benefits.

A 2006 study showed that moderate cannabis use had a positive effect of retention rates and abstinence from cocaine.

Another study found cannabis to be effective in the treatment of alcohol withdrawl symptoms.

It has even helped patients to quit crack use by reducing the craving symptoms.

As an ex-crack user for 2 years and with very sobriety under my belt I have found that using marijuana helps in many ways. Firstly, when I try to sleep at night, when I do actually drift off, I find myself oftentimes dreaming of cocaine and crack, which of course causes me to wake and not fall back asleep. When I go to work the next day I am exhausted and feel tortured. Secondly, when I smoke pot, I don’t or rarely think about using the other drug. I have tried to some sleep aids, but they are invariably opiates and more dangerous than my original addiction. Lastly, the stress and depression that I go through due to this disorder, self-inflicted as it may be, are quelled immensely by using pot. One problem, when I go to pick up pot, I find myself completely paranoid on the drive back home to the point where I have a hard time concentrating on the road and am at risk of a possible accident where myself or someone could be seriously injured. Due to these reasons, I believe having a prescription for marijuana would greatly help me stay on track and move forward properly. One more problem, my GP does not agree. He wants to prescribe, I think he said, diazapam? which to my knowledge is an opiate which I don’t want to be addicted to. Any help out there with this ongoing problem?
